Plus-size work trousers that aren't leggings

You have been wearing a ponte legging to the office because it is the only thing that fits and does not need thinking about.

A trouser can do the same job. The whole decision is the fabric.

Every piece named below is a real product, carried in size 22, at 6 shops we check. Prices in USD and correct at August 27, 2026. We take no commission, which is why we can tell you not to buy something.

Buy the fabric, not the style

Two fabrics work at size 22 and above. Ponte, which is a thick knit that holds a shape and moves like a legging. And a crisp woven with a small amount of stretch, which hangs away from you instead of following you.

What to avoid: a thin woven with no stretch, which sits in every crease by mid-morning, and a soft drapey rayon, which clings to the back of the leg.

The rise is the second decision, and the answer is high. A high rise on a trouser is what stops the waistband from being something you manage all day.

Under $70, buy two

Old Navy's Taylor trouser is the least money you can spend on a real wide-leg trouser and it is genuinely good. Buy it in black and in a neutral.

Eloquii's pinstripe reads more expensive than it is because the fabric is crisp rather than soft.

If you want the legging feel in a real trouser

Ponte is the answer and Spanx makes the best version. It is a knit, so it stretches; it is thick, so it holds a flat front and a clean seam.

A flare or wide leg in ponte is the closest thing there is to wearing nothing while looking dressed.

The two tops that make them an outfit

A fine knit tucked at the front only, or a poplin shirt left out. That is the whole rotation.

Add a ponte blazer if your office needs one; it is the only suiting fabric that does not pull across the back when you reach for something.

One knit, one shirt, one jacket that behaves. This is a week of outfits with the trousers above.

Questions people ask

What trouser fabric is best for plus sizes?
Ponte if you want stretch that holds its shape, or a crisp woven with a little stretch if you want the trouser to hang away from the leg.
Are wide-leg trousers office appropriate?
Yes, and they are now the default in most US offices. A wide leg hemmed to the shoe reads more formal than a tapered one.
How much should I spend?
Under $30 gets you a good wide leg from Old Navy. Around $158 gets you Spanx ponte you will wear weekly for years. Both are reasonable answers.
