What to wear to a wedding at size 24

Decide the line before you decide the colour
A wedding is four hours of standing, sitting and being photographed from the side. That rules out anything you have to hold still in.
At size 24 two lines do the most work. A column — one unbroken vertical from shoulder to hem — reads long and needs no adjustment all evening. A defined waist with weight in the skirt gives you movement without cling.
What to skip: a bodycon knit, which shows every seam of what you are wearing underneath, and a shapeless shift, which reads as an apology.

Separates solve the problem a single dress cannot: your bust and your hip are rarely the same number.
A wide-leg trouser in a crisp fabric with a good top reads more considered than a dress bought in a hurry. It also survives the next three occasions.

Wedding venues are grass, gravel and one long walk from the car. A heel you cannot stand in for four hours is not an option, it is a countdown.

- Not white, and not cream near the bride. Everything else is open, including black, which is now unremarkable at an evening wedding.
- How far ahead should I order?
- Three weeks. Two of those are for the return and the replacement, because the first dress will not be the one.
- Do I need sleeves?
- Only if you want them. A cape sleeve or a three-quarter sleeve gives you coverage without heat; a sleeveless column with a scarf works in a warm venue.
