Wide calf boots that actually fit
A boot that will not zip is the most predictable disappointment in plus-size shopping, and it is a drafting problem, not a you problem.
Measure your calf at its widest point in the sock you will wear. That number, not your shoe size, decides which boots are possible.

The measurement that matters
Standard boots are cut for a calf of about 14 in to 15 in. Wide calf usually means 16 in to 18 in, and extra wide runs from 19 in up.
Two shops draft for this rather than adding an inch and calling it wide: Torrid, whose wide-calf boots are graded as their own fit, and Naturalizer, which sizes the foot up to 12XW and offers an extra-wide shaft.
Check the shaft height as well. A boot that stops at the widest part of your calf is tighter than a taller one that clears it.

The ankle boot, which sidesteps the problem entirely
An ankle boot has no shaft to fight with. If you only want one pair of boots that will definitely fit, buy this shape.
Wear it with a wide-leg trouser long enough to cover the top. A cropped trouser and an ankle boot cut your leg at its narrowest and shortest point.

What to wear them with
Over a straight-leg jean, not tucked into it, unless the shaft is genuinely roomy at the top.
Under a midi skirt, with a gap of bare leg or tights between hem and boot. The gap is what keeps the proportion from reading as a single block.

- How do I measure my calf for boots?
- Stand up, wrap a tape around the widest part of your calf over the sock you will wear, and keep the tape level. Write the number down in inches.
- What counts as wide calf?
- Roughly 16 in to 18 in. Above 19 in you want extra wide, and you should filter for it rather than hoping.
- Do wide-calf boots come in wide widths too?
- Not always, and the two are separate. Torrid's WW and Naturalizer's XW cover both; most other shops widen only one.
